Velcro strap too long to be useful

I have a different wrist slate with a 12" band that I have used for years. I bought this one to replace it. It is smaller, which is ok, but the wrist strap is so long 18" it makes it worthless to me. I ordered on Amazon a 15" velcro strap just to make this useable. 
Perhaps made for diver with drysuit on not for normal 3.2mm wetsuit. Would return but held on too long before trying out.

Instructor Bill:  Should be able to trim it if needed FYI
